MILWAUKEE AREA TEACHERS OF ART
CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS
** In order to change the constitution the entire membership must vote.**
Article I Name of the Organization
The name of the organization shall be the Milwaukee Area Teachers of Art.
Article II Objectives
The objectives of the organization shall be as follows:
- To further the interests of art and art education in the community through its schools.
- To promote professional growth among the members through the fostering of social fellowship based on common backgrounds, problems and interests.
- To encourage creative growth among the members of Milwaukee area art educators through the sponsorship of annual art teachers’ exhibits, workshops, tours and other related activities.
- To pursue a course of action that will keep art education before the public as a positive force.
- To form a strong and solid group that will be able to express the opinions of the Milwaukee area art educators on issues affecting art and art education in our community.
- To provide opportunities for and encourage art teachers to involve their students in local, state and national exhibitions.
Article III Membership
- Membership is open to all interested individuals who desire to promote the aims of MATA.
- Life Membership may be awarded, at the discretion of the board, to any retiring member who has belonged to the organization a minimum of ten years. (This is normally given to an individual who has made significant contributions to MATA through service on the board.)
- Honorary memberships may be awarded upon the recommendation of the membership and approval of the board.
Article IV Officers
There shall be a president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer and
past-president.
Article V Executive board
There shall be an executive board composed of as many members are necessary to fulfill the Duties that need to be assigned, including the officers, membership chairperson, newsletter editor, plus other members.
Executive board members will be given a copy of the constitution and responsibilities. This should be included in the job folder they are given.
Article VI Activities
Professional activities, committee organization, meeting sites and times shall be the responsibility of the executive board.
Article VII Committees
- The nominating committee for the new board members shall be appointed by the president.
- Special committees may be initiated by the board to carry out the constitutional objectives of the organization. The committees shall include one member of the executive board.
Article VIII Method of Amending the Constitution and By-Laws
The constitution may be amended or revised by a simple majority of those responding to the publication of the proposed changes.
BY-LAWS
Section I Dues
The annual dues and due date shall be determined by the executive board. Membership shall run from September to September.
Section II Election of Officers
- The president-elect shall be elected by a majority of those members responding to a printed ballot.
- The secretary and treasurer shall be appointed from with-in the board by the president.
- Executive board members shall be elected for a three year term.
- If an unexpected vacancy should occur on the board. The position shall be filled by board appointment with primary consideration to those on the previous executive board ballot.
Section III Term of Officers
- The president shall serve a one year term. Following the term of office, he/she shall serve as past-president for one year.
- The president-elect shall serve a one year term and succeed to the presidency.
- The secretary shall serve a one year term.
- The treasurer shall serve a one year term
- The executive board members shall be elected for a three year term. Any board member who becomes voluntarily inactive by missing three board meetings will be replaced at the discretion of the board.
Section IV Duties of the Officers and Board
- The president shall preside at all board meetings of the organization. He/she shall call such meetings as he/she, the board or the membership deem necessary to carry out the objectives of the organization. The president shall be responsible for insuring that the annual membership exhibition and dinner be held. (Other duties will be kept in a folder that shall be passed down from one president to another.)
- The president-elect shall preside at all board meetings in the absence of the president. If for some reason, the president is unable to complete his/her term of office, the president-elect shall automatically become president for the unexpired term.
- The secretary shall serve as recording secretary, including record keeping of meeting minutes and brochures.
- The treasurer shall collect dues and pay all bills of the organization as directed by the president. He/she shall give a financial report at all board meetings and at general meetings upon request.
- The membership chairperson shall prepare and maintain a membership roster.
- All chairmen of special committees shall be appointed by the president.
- The newsletter editor shall be responsible for insuring that a monthly newsletter from September to June be sent to all members. (summer issues are optional) They should also keep archives of the newsletters created during their term. Historical archives of newsletters will be held by the president.
Section V Annual Election
The annual election shall be held in the spring. The results shall be published and announced at the annual membership exhibition and dinner. At the final board meeting of the membership year, the newly elected officers shall assume their duties.
